Over 60 vintage photographs taken by leading photographers during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries show the wildness and beauty of the ever changing Columbia River, from its source at Canal Flats in BC to its mouth near Astoria, Oregon.

Over 60 vintage photographs taken by leading photographers during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries show the wildness and beauty of the ever changing Columbia River, from its source at Canal Flats in BC to its mouth near Astoria, Oregon.Gathered from 16 museums, libraries, private collections and archives (including the BC Archives) across Canada and the U.S., the photos, taken by leading photographers of the day, show a river of exquisite wildness and beauty, which, in sheer strength, is the most powerful in North America.

Suspended above the photographs are streams of beautiful silk salmon, recreating the fish’s great journey upriver. At the same time, soundscapes and contemporary poetry create a reflective visitor experience.

From its source in BC, the Columbia flows almost 2,000 kilometres (1,243 miles) to the Pacific, descending an average of more than 38 centimetres per kilometre (2 feet per mile). Traversing two countries, its watershed is equal in size to France, and it dumps an average of 570 billion litres (150 billion gallons) of water into the Pacific Ocean every day – enough to cover the combined areas of Washington and Oregon in 38 centimetres (two feet) deep of water.

River of Memory: The Everlasting Columbia is curated by Dr. William Layman, guest curator at the Wenatchee Museum and Cultural Center, who has spent more than 20 years researching photographs that reveal the eloquence and beauty of the Columbia River. He has also co-authored the exhibition's companion book of the same name. Dr. Layman will present a free noon-hour talk in the Royal BC Museum’s Newcombe Conference Hall, March 6, 2008.
